Memorial complex to the Soviet soldier near Rzhev

The memorial complex in memory of all soldiers of the Great Patriotic War is built on the site of the bloody fighting under Rzhev 1942-1943, it is created on the initiative of veterans of the Great Patriotic War, those who fought here, who held and bled the forces of Hitler 's army group "Center".

A 25-metre figure of a soldier on a high bulk hill will stand near the “М9” road. The names of the fallen will be immortalized on the steel walls and in the multimedia exposition of the museum pavilion, which will become a branch of the Victory Museum.

Sculpture of the project: Andrei Korobtsov
Architect: Konstantin Fomin

The creation of the monument of the sculpture was inspired by the trilogy of K. Simonov "Living and Dead," poems by A. Twardovsky "I am killed under Rzhev" and R. Gamzatov "Zhuravli" (“Cranes”) which suggested the idea of a figure of a soldier breaking into wedges of cranes.

"It seems to me at times
That the soldiers did not come from bloody fields,
Have once gone not into our land,
But turned into white cranes...."

There will be 62.000 names of fallen soldiers on the steel walls near the complex. In total, the Soviet army lost about 1 million 300,000 people here.

The opening of the memorial will take place on May 9, 2020 and will rightly become the central event of celebrations dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory.
